Stumptown: It’s Always About Comicbook Love

Phew! Well, we’re back from Stumptown Comics Fest 2011, and it was a blast, as always!

The show was AWESOME! Greg Hinkle, Stephenny Godfrey, myself (Emily) and my husband Nicholas were all slinging our wares in true Writers Old Fashioned style.  Greg was promoting his horror anthology and WOF collaboration, Parasomnia (with stories by STORM, Jason McNamara and Matt Silday). Steph was rocking her brand new mini comic, Two Buses. Two Buses is the sequel to her award-winning Panorama, measuring 15ft in length, it’s 2ft longer than the first!  Nicholas and I were ECSTATIC to be debuting our first full length comic, Miners Mutiny! Now on sale in fine San Francisco establishments. Justin Hall was over at the Prism booth in it’s unfortunately, undesirable location (in front of the ladies room) where he was working his amazing new Glamazonia book!

Princess Witch Boy is a fantasy memoir, weaving together true tales of one boy’s story with the adventures of three different women from his imagination.  The second issue focuses on Replica, a shape-changing super-spy from a distant planet.  As Replica searches for clues pertaining to her identity, the young boy learns startling revelations about his family.  By pretending to be Replica, he finds the means to survive in less than ideal situations.  This story examines the places in which fantasy and reality intersect, creating new ways to think and to believe.   Continue Reading »

Alternative Press Expo returns to San Francisco this October 16th and 17th and Writers Old Fashioned is rip, roaring and ready to go!  Visit your favorite comic book guild at Table#224 and attend our panel on Sunday!  Here’s what the official APE solicit has to say:

12:00-1:00 Writer’s Old Fashioned—The Writer’s Old Fashioned group is the latest in a long line of illustrious San Francisco–based comics movements and is proving to be one of the most dynamic. Originally a small group of comics writers who began meeting in 2006 to exchange ideas, provide feedback, and imbibe a few drinks, WOF has expanded to include some cartoonists, comics illustrators, and even teetotalers. Moderator Justin Hall (Glamazonia) will grill Kirsten Baldock (Smoke and Guns), Stephenny Godfrey (Panorama), Jason McNamara (Martian Confederacy), Matt Silady (The Homeless Channel), Emily Stackhouse (Brazilia Noir), and Storm (Princess Witch Boy) about their creative endeavors and drinking habits.

We will see you there!

NPR’s Snap Judgment Features Stephenny Godfrey & STORM

Last WonderCon, NPR Producer Stephanie Foo had one question on her mind:  What was the first superhero that you created?  She asked this question to many comic book artists and Stephenny Godfrey and I were included in her project (I found it rather serendipitous that she wanted to know about the heroes I created as a kid as I am drawing them now as an adult for my self-published memoir fantasy comic Princess Witch Boy). A week later, Stephanie wrote us, asking for images from our childhood to be used in a slideshow to compliment the interviews!

Stephenny, Storm, and their Trophies.

Boy, Portland, you sure know how to make creators feel welcome.

Ever since I was welcomed into the fold here at Writers Old Fashioned, I’ve heard about how much fun the Stumptown Comics Fest is. Its been nothing but “Well, the Portland fest is sooo cool!” and “Just wait until we get to Stumptown and you’ll see.” And after spending three days mingling with the people of Portland, I’ve got to admit that it may be the most comic-friendly city I’ve ever been to.
