Trifecta

When I’m not reading comics, I’m making comics. When I’m not making comics, I’m teaching comics. And my students are starting to get some attention for their work!

Ben Costa wins a Xeric.
Bex Freund lands her work in a literary magazine.
And KOAK takes her character sketches to a whole new level.

Brazilianoir!  That’s right, you heard it here first (or maybe here).  Emily Stackhouse and Nicholas Shahan’s  first mini comic, Brazilianoir, brought home the gold for Outstanding D.I.Y. at Stumptown Comics Fest 2009.

Thank you Portland for sharing your love!

Good Luck, Mindy!

With heavy hearts, we bid adieu to one of our own. Writers Old Fashioned founding member, Mindy Owens, is leaving the Bay and heading east. Whether she was galvanizing the Runaway’s fan-base or serving as San Francisco’s Queen of Comics, Mindy did her duty to make the comics world and ours a better place.

Now, she’s off to conquer Japan (Kishiwada, specifically.) Everyone here at Writers Old Fashioned wishes her the best of luck and we’ll raise a glass to her at our next meeting. Most of all, we can’t wait for her to start penning some Manga and seeing it published here in the states!

Cheers!

Matt Silady: Eisner Nominee

Congratulations to Matt Silady who has been nominated for an Eisner Award, the comic industry’s most prestigious honor!

I think it is obvious from the moment that anyone meets Matt that he is a guy who is just bursting with talent. And his excellent book, The Homeless Channel, is further proof that he’s really going places. So I was overjoyed, but not at all surprised, to hear that the Eisner committee also feels that Matt’s work deserves Special Recognition.

Watch out, comic industry! He’s only getting better!
