Lend a Hand to Your Extended Comics Family

David Pirkola, a comics retailer in Grand Rapids Michigan, is in stable but critical condition after being shot during a robbery in his store.

The wonderful folks at iFanboy have set up a fund to help David with his medical bills as he was uninsured. As a person who spends a fair amount of time behind the counter of a comic book store, this is a very important cause to me. I hope that you will consider doing what you can to help our extended comics family.

You can contribute to the cause by clicking here.

We’re heading to the Stumptown Comics Fest this weekend.  Should be a great show.  April is Comic Book Month in Portland, you know. Stop by Table 90 if you are in the area and say hi!

Using Mass Effect as a motivational tool?

As some of you may know, either from previous posts or from knowing me personally, I have a little (when I say little I actually mean gigantic) problem with motivating myself to do what I should be doing. You may be familiar with the feeling yourselves. You know the one, that teeny-tiny voice in the back of your mind. The passive guy at the back of the room meekly clearing his throat, trying to get your attention. And whatever it may be you’re doing at the time, watching reruns of Friends, taking online quizzes, or in my case, playing the time-devouring video game, Mass Effect, that little guy in the back of the room, is still trying to get your attention. Maybe he even started waving his arms around a little. Continue Reading »

Matt Silady: Eisner Nominee

Congratulations to Matt Silady who has been nominated for an Eisner Award, the comic industry’s most prestigious honor!

I think it is obvious from the moment that anyone meets Matt that he is a guy who is just bursting with talent. And his excellent book, The Homeless Channel, is further proof that he’s really going places. So I was overjoyed, but not at all surprised, to hear that the Eisner committee also feels that Matt’s work deserves Special Recognition.

Watch out, comic industry! He’s only getting better!

Read about all the Eisner nominations here.

Wash the stink of that third movie off you

I recently spent some time in Vietnam and was surprised to discover that X-men is a leading brand of shampoo and soap. In what appears to be an all out, above board bootleg operation the company responsible also sells X-teen and Dr. Men products.

Check out their awesome TV commercial.
